Today, I am sharing 3 tips that come in 3’s to give you some more direction as you are putting together your outfits. These are handy little tools to make sure you have dimensional outfits that incorporate your personal sense of style. These tricks will give you some guidance to support you as you stare into the abyss of your overly stuffed closet with "nothing to wear".
What are your 3 words?
Think about your style- what 3 words convey your favorite aesthetics?
Incorporate one of each of these pieces in your outfit
Ex: girly, preppy, edgy: flowy white dress (girly), cardigan around the shoulders (preppy), little bag with chain straps (edgy).
Choose the word that you want to be dominant in the outfit, then sprinkle in your other words.
3 Accessory Rule:
In each outfit, be sure to incorporate at least 3 accessories.
Accessories add such dimension to an outfit, bringing an outfit from basic to chic, with a few simple additions.
Accessories do not need to be so obvious: a standout piece of jewelry, a cardigan tied around your shoulders, your hair pin, a pair of socks, etc., can all serve as perfect “accessories”.
Imagine a white t-shirt and blue jeans; now, imagine the same outfit with a belt, sweater over the shoulders, and your favorite watch. The outfit goes from boring to layered and interesting so easily!
One, Ton, or None:
Use these 3 words in order to understand how to incorporate color into your outfit: one, ton, or none.
One: Have a single pop of color in your outfit (ex. cream sweater, white linen pants, beige shoulder bag, with a pop of orange sandals).
Ton: Incorporate color in every piece of your outfit.
Color is funny, it can so easily clash, but it can also be very complementary to other colors.
If you’re going for “ton”, be mindful of the colors you are reaching for- make sure that they complement instead of clash.
I find this is much more of a summer style as it works really well with dresses. Imagine a soft-yellow, silk, midi-dress, paired with a burnt-orange shoulder bag, and coral sandals. The ton method really exudes fun, feminine, bright energy- IF executed properly!
None: Strip any color from your outfit.
I would guess that this no color variation technique is one that we are all well acquainted with. Monochrome outfits are easy, chic, and reliable. My advice here is to still make the outfit interesting in some other way; try playing around with silhouettes, materials, and even slightly nuanced shades of the same color.
Let's elevate black jeans, black sweater, black shoes, black bag: black, high-waisted, SILK pants, black, COTTON, oversized turtleneck cinched at the waist with a thin, patent leather belt, paired with pointed-toe black flats and a genuine leather tote.
